Chapter 4: Startling Revelations!

The flight back to Malibu was high-spirited as Derrick and the guys had a few drinks in celebration of their recent accomplishments. They had Champaign, beers and liquor in abundance as they had a fiesta in the air. Derrick arrived in California at approximately 6pm Sunday evening. He was highly intoxicated and as such was escorted home by Nathan, his trusted Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and best friend. Nathan assisted him in getting inside the house and into Megan’s arms; she called out for Jeffrey’s assistance, as they assisted him to the bedroom and helped him to settle down. Megan seemed gravely disgust of Derrick’s current state, “What happened on the plain Nathan? It’s not like Derrick to get plastered so badly.” Megan inquired. “He had a couple of drinks in celebration of landing the Nymphus contract that’s all. He should be okay in a couple of hours just give him some time to rest okay.” Nathan replied with a smirk on his face. “Thanks Nathan for not drinking, and the kind gesture of bringing him home.” Megan exclaimed with a smile. Nathan and Megan had some history, which predated her marriage to Derrick. They were secretly involved for more than two years. But when Megan got tired of hiding, Nathan wasn’t ready to take the next step in their relationship so Megan broke things off with him, then in walked Derrick who did what Nathan couldn’t.

Nathan was distraught at himself, but more so at Megan for dating his best friend, nonetheless, he never mentioned a word of this to Derrick, but it was obvious he still had feelings for her. The tension was getting so intense that Jeffrey had to ask if anyone needed a drink, they both rejected the offer and began talking again exchanging kinder pleasantries this time. Nathan then bid Megan goodbye with a fiddly demeanour, before heading for the door. When Derrick woke up, six hours later that night, he had a telling headache, so Megan gave him a few pain killers. He then began telling her how tiresome his trip was initially and why he had to celebrate. Megan wanted to ask him why he had so much to drink, but she held her peace, knowing it might just start a fight she could not win. Their relationship went smoothly for the next two days with Derrick sending her flowers at work, calling her frequently and sharing his thoughts and ideas with her. This was short-lived, however, as Derrick quickly reverted to his old ways, no sooner than the following day. He forgot to send her flowers, he didn’t call her at lunch and he didn’t even bother to inform her that he would be late for dinner. Megan tried very hard not to panic and think the worst. She allowed herself to believe that he genuinely forgot to do all those things.

Over time, things started getting worst between Megan and Derrick. Whenever he got home early from work, he would lock himself inside his office, while spending time on the phone or on his computer.
